Embracing Exercise for Cancer Patients
Author: Melanie Bowen

It often takes a person discovering just how much of a difference exercise can make before a real passion for fitness and exercise is developed.  For cancer patients, exercise can make a huge difference by adding a higher quality of life, which can be enough for a person to begin making lifestyle changes.  When lifestyle changes are made in the life of a person who is fighting cancer, numerous positive results can be expected.  From lowering blood pressure to improving energy to reducing physical pain and stress, exercise can do wonders for someone who is fighting a life-threatening illness.

Starting a Routine for Exercise – One Day at a Time

Starting an exercise routine is best done with planning and consultation with your physician. Your doctor will be able to help create an appropriate and beneficial routine for your condition. In addition, it is important to keep track of your progress so you will be able to discover which types of exercise activities gave you the most results.  If you felt great after walking but not quite as good after bicycling, it is important to write this down. Journaling and continuously checking in with your doctor will be beneficial by helping you to formulate an effective, long-term workout routine.

Scheduling activities one day at a time is helpful because one day you may feel stronger than the next.  As you go through chemotherapy treatments and radiation treatments, there may be days where your body is simply not up for a rigorous amount of physical exercise.  During these days, even a few minutes of yoga can help by relieving mental stress and improving the blood flow through your circulatory system.  This can lead to a better night’s sleep, which is important for anyone who is fighting a disease.

Exercising will also be different for patients battling different diseases as well. Patients battling mesothelioma or lung cancer may not be able to participate in cardiovascular activity so it is very important to speak with a doctor about what other options would be beneficial. Similarly, patients with extremely compromised immune systems such as those diagnosed with forms of leukemia, may be advised not to use public gyms or pools because they will be more likely to contract an illness. Therefore, their workout routines need to be tailored for their home. All of these considerations need to be discussed with a doctor in order to develop an appropriate and beneficial program.

Embracing the Benefits of Exercise

In an online article provided by the American Cancer Society, the potential benefits of exercise for cancer patients are listed as consistent.  These benefits are vast and varied and can range from improving how a person feels physically each day to the person growing physically stronger by promoting healthy organs and increased strength.

Learning to embrace these benefits and enhancing them by adding a healthy diet and getting a support group to provide support and encouragement can help a person to succeed at meeting any type of fitness goals while battling a major disease.

Nike Kobe 8 system, so far...

If my gut feelings are right on this one, this could, quite possible be, one of the best, if not the best shoe, for a guard, ever.

Whaats up people?!!

So I've been performance testing the Nike Kobe 8 system for quite some time now, managed to get in quite a bit of hours on it on an indoor court (8 hours, in total, it's Malaysia, it's not easy to find an indoor court to play at), and so far, the shoe has been AMAZING, Nike has totally set the bar really really high with the Kobe 8, and that means great times hooping in great shoes for us!

So let's get to it.

As most of you will remember from my last post, the Kobe 8 uses good old herringbone traction mixed with some storytelling traction on the side. The rubber is supersoft, and super pliable, making for super sticky, stop on a dime traction. The court I played at wasn't exactly clean and was somewhat dusty, but it was not a problem at all for the Kobe 8's traction . And so far, I have not experienced any kind of slippage whatsoever, scouts honour.

The engineered mesh is surprisingly, more sturdy and tougher than it looks. I thought there was a chance that it will get ripped from either someone stepping on my feet or too much lateral movements, but, after a few games, I'm pretty confident it can definitely hold up. Plus, they are much more rigid and supportive than they feel.

Cushioning in the form of lunarlon is everything I ever imagined it would be and more. Lunarlon disperses your feet's impact much better and softer than Zoom air does, and is very  responsive, granted, I still like the responsiveness I receive from Zoom air a tad bit better. But don't take this as me saying zoom is better than Lunarlon for responsiveness, it's a different material, and the way it responds is different. Lunarlon also offers a smoother and cushioned heel to toe transition. Every step, every stride I take feels nicely soft and bouncy at the same time. The foam insert has moulded to my feet, and they just feel awesome! The only thing I'm concerned about is how long is the cushioning going to last.

Fit and lockdown so far are AWSOME! the shoe keeps up effortlessly with any movements you make, and there is absolutely ZERO slippage at the heel. I'm serious, this shoe could possibly have, the best lockdown on a shoe EVER..=)

So that's it for now guys, stay tuned for the full review, which will be up once I get more hours in this shoe. =)
